What is Self-healing?

Cloud Elemental have developed an automated solution known as Self-healing as a way to recover from service failures. The solution monitors services and takes proactive action to fix issues based on specific playbooks and criteria defined by the individual business. Just how could Self-healing be useful for your organisation?

In a complex application there are many components. Due to it’s inherent complexity, there is a high likelihood that a singular component could fail, whether this is due to a bug, or an issue as simple as running out of disk space. Traditionally, a business will monitor their applications using an infrastructure tracking tool which allows them to collate real-time and historical data to measure uptime. If the service stops responding, the tool will recognise the error and this will trigger a notification to be issued to the support team. Once the support team has been notified, they can then take reparative action.

However, complex applications often require specialist skillsets which means having expensive people on call 24/7 “just in case” of an emergency. Although the people cost can be high, IBM’s cost of downtime report found that 35% of large US enterprises experienced unplanned downtime each month with the reaction time causing a loss of productivity and money. Atlassian suggest that the cost of downtime can be calculated as:

With the cost per minute for small business being $427, and $9,000 for medium and large businesses, even a short outage can be expensive.

How can Cloud Elemental help?

Our Self-healing solution follows a set of procedures to recover an application from failure. When an alarm is triggered, the software checks to see if the event is planned. If service interruption is unplanned, then the software will intelligently work through the recovery procedures, sending notifications to the support team at every stage to allow for auditability. By using a highly configurable approach, users can customise the solution to suit their application’s needs and their own recovery processes. A simple workflow for a 3-tier app might look like the below:
